Kid’s Fishing Day at Maramec Spring Park, St. James MO

Kids Free Fishing Day at Maramec Spring Park takes place on the first Saturday following Mother’s Day. This special day is all about creating unforgettable experiences for children, introducing them to the joys of fishing, and fostering a love for nature and the great outdoors.

This years Kids Free Fishing day is May 17th, 2025. The event is put on by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in cooperation with The James Foundation. It offers free fishing and other fun activities for kids ages 15 years of age and younger. The park will open at 5:30 a.m. and the Kids Fishing Day event will go from 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine.

The entire upper half of the spring branch will be reserved for kids 15 years of age and younger. Free daily fishing tags for qualifying children can be picked up at the Mill Field Shelter the day of the event, or at the reception building on May 17.

MDC will stock rainbow trout throughout the day to ensure plenty of action to keep kids excited. Volunteers, along with MDC staff, will be on hand all day to assist young anglers with fishing. Among them will be some lunkers and tagged fish kids can redeem for prizes.

For families who are new to fishing or for kids who have never held a fishing rod before, there’s no need to worry. Maramec Spring Park is home to a dedicated group of volunteers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and ensuring every child has a positive experience. These volunteers are available throughout the event to help kids get started, offer tips, and provide support whenever needed. Parents and guardians can direct their kids to the pavilion to check in, where they’ll find all the assistance and information required to make the most of the day.

A casting contest will be held at 11 a.m. with prizes to be awarded. Free hotdogs and soda will also be available. Other attractions like fly tying demos educational exhibits, games and activities are planned from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fish print t-shirts will be on sale for $5. There will be free parking for cars with children 15 and under.

Don’t have any fishing gear? That’s not a problem either. The Company Store at the park is well-stocked with a variety of fishing equipment and supplies available for purchase. Whether it’s a fishing rod, bait, or other accessories, the store has everything a young angler might need to dive into the experience. A limited number of loaner fishing poles will be available, but kids are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles and equipment.

Kids Free Fishing Day isn’t just about fishing—it’s a chance for children to disconnect from their screens, connect with nature, and enjoy the thrill of catching their first fish. Maramec Spring Park, with its crystal-clear waters and abundant fish population, provides an ideal learning ground for young anglers to get excited about fishing.

Maramec Spring Park’s commitment to hosting events like Kids Free Fishing Day highlights its dedication to fostering a love for nature and outdoor activities among the younger generation.
